Jamie Gillan hadn’t any intention of enjoying the game and also came at the US as a rugby-obsessed teenager who had never watched football.
The Scot will make his NFL debut after procuring the job as Cleveland Browns’ punter.
It is a rise to prominence for Gillan – known’The Scottish Hammer’ – that has ousted former Super Bowl champion Britton Colquitt for a place on the Browns’ roster.
The 22-year-old informs BBC Scotland in regards to 18-hour school days’ slog, sharing etiquette that is kilt using a superstar team-mate, and bringing excellent skills to the NFL.
There was just 1 sport Gillan cared for growing up in Inverness. Desperate to play for his state, he adopted his dream by going away to attend school being boarded by Merchiston Castle in Edinburgh.
“I was absolutely rugby mad and miss it,” he says. “The only reason why I chose to go to Merchiston was because of all of the men they’d put through to Scotland.”
It was there, because of fly-half that was promising , he built his talent for kicking off after his career took another trajectory, that will come in miles.
His father, also a navigator with the Royal Air Force, was posted to Maryland and the family, such as a 16-year-old Jamie, left Scotland for a new life Stateside.
Even then, he fell to an end. Gillan approached the trainer of his high school football team with the intention of blowing off his way so as to stay fit throughout the rugby off-season, after chasing rugby regionally inside his house.
With a few tweaks to his strategy, Gillan quickly became supplies of scholarships to play college soccer and an accomplished kicker began to arrive.
“I was a tiny bit undersized in Scotland,” he said. “So when I came out here, I was hoping to get bigger and I just happened to see the football side and I was like,’I might as well offer a it a blast’.
“All my mates were telling me that you could receive scholarships for kicking a ball and that I did not believe them at first. However, I thought I’d give it a try once I watched the guy missing field objectives.”
Gillan quickly created himself a name in the college game with the University of Arkansas Pine-Bluff, getting one of the kicking and punting options in his summit.
Within his four-year career, he handled 9,024 metres on 214 attempts and averaged 42.2 yards per punt. His longest punt was a 80 yards and 27 punts that exceeded 50 yards were attained by him.
However, a university athlete’s life is a Gillan discovered the balance of studies and sport gruelling and demanding one.
“It was unreal, really tough,” he said. “Up at 4.30am, running until you can not breathe, then you have got four classes later, then meetings, then weightlifting. Then you have got meetings through the night, then study hall from 8.30pm until 11pm, after which you’re up at 4am. It’s a foolish program but you did it like everybody else.”
Left foot and his consistency led from the NFL, with all the Browns first to show their hand by inviting Gillan prior to the 2019 draft to Ohio for a trip.
Punters are among the least sought-after positions from the draft as the team’s 32 teams replenish their ranks with the greatest faculty gift, therefore if he went unpicked, Gillan was not too deflated.
“But I got a telephone call after the fifth round from a coach here and he had been saying he was hoping I don’t have picked up,” he said. “Then, after the draft ended, a lot of other teams called trying to bring me in as a free agent. But there wasn’t any question, ” I was planning to return to the Browns since they’d shown me a lot of love.”
Mixing the Browns Gillan featured in games, delve right into punt returners with all rugby-style tackling which helped him set him apart. And despite the in spotlight and caliber , he wasn’t fazed, edging outside Colquitt to get the nod.
“I know plenty of individuals get nervous and things but for me it was enjoyable,” he explained. “We had a enormous crowd for the first match, bigger than any I’ve ever played in front of in Arkansas. But when I went out there it was not like a stomach of butterflies, shaky legs, or nervous – it was merely ultra focus.”
The Scottish Hammer now shares a locker room with a few of the most well-known names in sport.
The NFL’s biggest trade of the off year saw superstar receiver Odell Beckham Jr arrive from the New York Giants at Cleveland. And after sporting a kilt Beckham might be wishing he’d sought the advice of his fresh.
“It was amusing,” Gillan said”I did have to tell himthoughhe wore it the wrong way. He wore the item backwards. I informed him and he was not shocked. He was like,’Are you really certain?’ . I was like,’Yeah, I friend! He has been good craic.”
On the chance of his fame, Gillan all is carrying it all.
“I don’t think I’m famous however,” he explained. “But it’s cool to have any fans and folks taking the entire Scottish Hammer item and running with it. It’s pretty funny.”
Scotland director Steve Clarke tells Tom English about following famous footsteps, exactly that which he has learned in the likes of Jose Mourinho, and being”quietly surprised” by his own group.

Paddy McNair believes Northern Ireland are still capable of Euro 2020 qualification

Paddy McNair has told his Northern Ireland team-mates to maintain thinking they can qualify for Euro 2020 after their hopes took a hit with Monday’s 2-0 home defeat to Germany.
A spirited performance at Windsor Park was not enough to stop Michael O’Neill’s side falling their first stages of the effort as Marcel Halstenberg’s outstanding attack and Serge Gnabry second demonstrated the
difference.
The effect saw Germany move top level, of Group C with Northern Ireland to 12 points in five matches.
But the job is not any easier for the White and Green Army away up next and a trip to Frankfurt to emerge in November.
“Of course we would have obtained this position at the start of the effort,” McNair said. “We have three very tough games to come and then we proceed to Holland in another match.
“Then we have them in the home and Germany away, however we are not likely to become disheartened.
“We will give all of them a difficult game. There are plenty of positives and we proceed to next month.”
A frustrated O’Neill called the game a”missed opportunity” in the immediate aftermath, provided the chances Northern Ireland created, including two openings for Conor Washington, through a strong beginning to the night.
“It is really smaller margins from the match, but I thought we had been magnificent from the first half,” McNair added. “It is definitely a gigantic improvement. In the second half, Stuart [Dallas] took a yard wide and that could easily go the other side of the post that makes it another game .”
After McNair tumbled from Toni Kroos northern Ireland may have had the opportunity to level from the penalty spot just before the hour, however their allure were waved by referee Daniel Orsato.
“I haven’t seen the punishment episode again, but that I certainly felt a little contact,” said McNair. “There was not much contact, but I moved down. I didn’t want to maintain a scenario where the ref thought it was a dive and then sent me away [to get a second
Booking ], however I did not want him to think because it was felt by me, there was no contact.
“It was not much, but I know why the referee didn’t give it. There was touch, though, I’ve no doubt about this. Maybe VAR could have cleared up that.”
Dallas fired wide soon afterwards, but this was the last chance for the hosts before Gnabry settled issues in stoppage time.
“It’s a great sign coming out of a game thinking we definitely have to have taken something out of it,” McNair added. “It’s our best performance against them in recent encounters, but you can’t help but feel this was a missed chance.
“But we’re still joint top of the bunch. I know we have three difficult games coming up, but we must stay optimistic considering the position we’ve put ourselves ”

Point/Counterpoint: Notre Dame vs Louisville – Free NCAAF Betting Picks

Notre Dame (9) vs Louisville
Monday, September 2 nd, 8:00 PM at Cardinal Stadium
Swinging Johnson: This week Doug Upstone and leave our college football picks on the Monday night match between the Louisville Cardinals and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and then I will detract from our regularly scheduled plan of NFL debate to dip our toes into uncharted waters.
It will almost certainly be the very first and only time this year we do so, as the last week of display NFL football is somewhat lackluster in comparison to some regular-season sport of NCAA football comprising one of the top clubs in the nation, plus a mythical football program to boot up, Notre Dame.
Without further ado, lets start the debate after my friend Doug Upstone got the better of me last week while the Titans were endorsed by me. We have been placing wins back and forth so it appears like its my turn to get the wreath, as I heartily endorse the Irish and will follow the squares laying the lumber that is heavy onto a street favorite.
After reviewing the college football odds almost six days ahead of the Monday night event, I see the line has spiked a half-point on the preferred, opening at Notre Dame -19 1/2 to where its currently offered in a solid -20 throughout the board whatsoever of the best online sportsbooks.
I enjoy the Irish but you are leaning within this clash on the Cardinals. Apart from the place, why is it that you think Louisville could hang with the boys?
Doug Upstone: Yes a successful win and at least IMO, said a great deal about the Steelers and Titans direction. Let us move to real soccer, so will our recordings with this one and where the games rely.
Remember all those Thursday night matches Louisville used to perform against competitions that are big-name? They more than held their engineered and own several upsets. These were fun games to watch and also the Cardinals were a thrilling golf club.
But for example the former Papa Johns Stadium and its fake (in real life) proprietor, Louisville football last year was worse than a three-day-old pizza.
Scott Satterfield worked miracles and will be out win matches and to alter the culture. This will not happen immediately as the talent level is down in theVille. This is a major moment for Louisville, a team which has the chance to start taking steps in the right direction.
I have read in which the Cards coaches have popped up the slow mechanics of QB Jawon Pass (good name for a QB) and I like Hassan Hall since the direct running back. Than using a ticket for the Colts at OVER 9 for season wins the shield that makes me more worried. Why you have your Irish up, please dont forget.
Swinging Johnson: The Cardinals wont be doing since the Notre Dame defense will keep them cozy in their nest, flying in this game. Scott Satterfield is presently in the big leagues and hes got a team coming off of a dismal 2-10 album this past year where they went winless. This rebuild is comparable to trying to turn it in an F-22 Raptor and taking a hot air balloon.
While this may eventually occur, the problem is that Louisville is facing a team which made it into the CFP last year and possessed only one of the stingiest defenses in all of college football, devoting only 17.2 points within the regular season and moving a perfect 12-0 until they fulfilled Clemson in the CFP semifinals. The offense was clicking on all cylinders as well, averaging over 33 points per game.
My query is, just how is a quarterback like Pass whos slow to discharge, supposed to gain any traction against a defense? Especially when he is working with a new coach and an offensive strategy?
Please, Doug, rescue me I am lost! I see no way, shape or form in which Louisville is going to be able to keep up with the Golden Domers and Im desperate to prodigious handicapping experience and the sage wisdom!
Doug Upstone: Well, Swinger, Im pleased to read in your last sentence you are coming around to the bright side of sport betting, or youre just being the identical wise a** you are. Ill allow the SBR readers that are making that is decided on by college football selections. Im the first to understand Louisville completely sucked and was 1-11 ATS, although not just 2-10 final year.
Like he gave up on the Atlanta Falcons However, coach Bobby Petrino was given up on by that staff COMPLETELY. A fresh attitude is brought by A trainer on building a statement and with this being a match, his staff will be sold by Satterfield. Louisville does have to hope the Irish will take them for granted and never have a lot of fight.
Lets also think about, Brian Kelly using all the gold and blue is ATS as a road favorite, and a mere 7-9-1 ATS, when dishing out more or 20 digits. That defense you mentioned might improve as the season progresses but replacing five starters, even if you dont/can not amuse like Clemson or even Bama, it is going to take time.
I was being a bit facetious because although youve got an handicapping that was impressive resume, then you miss the mark from time to time. And in this scenario, because Louisville could be better than last year but Id submit that they could be trained by a Rhesus monkey and enhance upon their deplorable record left by an coach such as Petrino you happen to be shooting blanks.
I know that laying nearly 3 touchdowns on the street would be square biz for sure and Joe Q. Public never got rich by betting the heavy street chalk, but sometimes the public is correct, and in this case they certainly are. Until once we get back on our NFL Game of the Week next week, let us see what happens on Monday night when the Irish come ready to rumble in Louisville.
Free College Football Pick: Swinging Johnson — Notre Dame -20 (-110)
Free College Football Pick: Doug Upstone — Louisville +20 (-110)
