“At this moment, everybody in Yugoslavia knew that war would occur,” Gramoz states. “They simply didn’t know when or where it would begin.”
The next decade would be defined by years of suffering. Throughout the 1990s, Yugoslavia was plunged into a bloody conflict where as many as 140,000 people were killed.
From this fighting emerged that the different modern territories of now: Serbia, Slovenia, Croatia, Montenegro, Bosnia-Herzegovina, and the recently renamed North Macedonia. Kosovo was the last to declare itself an independent state.
Lulzim Berisha was 20 when he took up arms. He also joined the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA). This was 1998.
For the past six years he’d been in Pristina, still living under Yugoslav principle but enjoying soccer in what was an unofficial Kosovan top flight set up after the institution of some separatist shadow republic there.
Matches were held on pitches in rural locations. Fans could collect on sloping hillsides to watch. Serbian police would prevent the gamers in route and detain them. He’d later be held at the United Nations (UN) war crimes tribunal for genocide and other war crimes carried out in Kosovo, Croatia and Bosnia. In 2006, he was discovered dead in his mobile prior to his trial could be completed, 64.
The territory remained for two years under UN rule, after Serb forces left Kosovo in 1999. About 850,000 people had fled the fighting.
