Multiple Paralympic swimming winner Jessica Long says adjustments to the sport’s classification system have influenced her motivation.
International Paralympic Committee (IPC) rules require all competitions to undergo international classification before the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics.
Some athletes have been moved into the 27-year-old American’s S8 class, which makes her competition.
“It breaks my heart, was an S8 my entire life,” Long told BBC Sport.
“The thing everyone must realise is that it impacts another generation and that’s really sad.
“I’ve trained so hard to be where I am at – that I train with Olympic athletes and when I’m fighting to reach the top then there is something wrong.”
Long, who was born in Siberia but embraced by an American family, had her legs amputated when she had been 18-months-old as a result of a birth defect.
She left her Paralympic debut when she won three gold medals dated 12 at Athens in 2004.
She has since then been a dominant force inside her class, becoming one of the faces of this game and winning many titles.
She gets and she’s encouraged by the changes in the sport, while she admits the Para-swimming World Championships of this week haven’t been her focus.
