Australia eventually broke England’s brave resistance to keep the Ashes using a success in the fourth Test at Old Trafford.
Amid incredible tension on the fifth evening, England ninth-wicket set Craig Overton and also Jack Leach survived against the second new ball for 14 overs.
However, after Leach turned the leg-spin of Marnus Labuschagne to quick legOverton was lbw into Josh Hazlewood to give Australia victory with 13.3 of their day’s 98 overs remaining.
England began chasing 383, but realistically looking to bat throughout the day and establish a series decider at The Oval.
53 was made by joe Denly, while Jonny Bairstow Jason Roy and Jos Buttler revealed defiance and the big-hearted Overton spent 105 chunks.
But the Australia assault was too much as pace bowler Pat Cummins finished with 4-43 to hold back.
It means Australia will leave the UK together with the urn for the first time since 2001, while England will not add the Ashes to the World Cup they won in July.
If they are supposed to prevent suffering their first home series defeat england must win the last Exam.
The Evaluation – coach Trevor Bayliss’ final match in charge – begins on Thursday.
Despite the outcome, England can not be accused in their bidding to follow the World Cup closing and their triumph with a more Sunday.
Denly’s forward to the day’s ball was cheered along with also the Kent batsman came through a variety of scares to register his second half-century in as many matches.
Roy played within himself 31 from 67 balls, just to be bowled by Cummins, who’d Ben Stokes. Denly struck on Lyon following lunch to leg, however England had plenty more defiance left.
Buttler consumed 14 overs with Overton using Bairstow and 21, with whom he was reunite after tea. Although Buttler vigil was when he played with no shot on Hazlewood inswingerthat was not the ending.
Leach joined Overton to face the new ball. A crowd greeted every stroke every event that a fresh set of gloves appeared from the room louder than at any stage in the match.
After Leach was caught by Matthew Wade, it ended a 51-ball remain and punctured the air.
2 overs later, Overton, who had previously overturned being given out lbw to Cummins, had been immobilized by a Hazlewood inswinger and, this time, the review couldn’t save him.
Rory Burns was eliminated by cummins and captain Joe Root in balls over the fourth night and it had been the planet’s number one bowler who again led the Australia attack on Sunday.
In addition to Mitchell and Hazlewood Starc, the fast bowlers incessantly tested mettle with desperation, technique with motion, and England’s patience with precision.
They rotated to off-spinner Lyon, who struggled to provide a threat, but did accounts for Denly with rebound and, later, Jofra Archer with one that scuttled at the end.
In between, left-armer Starc got one to nip back and then trap Bairstow leg and, the replacement swung allowing Hazlewood to create, once the ball needed changing after 58 overs.
Just contrary to the pairing of Leach and Overton did that the men begin to show signs of fatigue.
Australia turned to Labuschagne, who had five balls as they assembled to watch the Overton inspection, to deliver, subsequently, the consequent decision sparked wild celebrations.
Together with the Ashes, just one flying team – England in 2010-11 – have finished a series for the last 18 decades. That this Australia side have finished their own drought is a remarkable turnaround from the turmoil of the scandal.
That controversy has led to the home crowds taunting them throughout this series, none more so than priest Steve Smith.
He reacted in just five innings with 671 runs and has been backed up with some brilliant pace bowling by Cummins and Hazlewood.
Australia could have secured the urn in the Evaluation and among those innings had Stokes not played with to offer a one-wicket win to England.
England can point to the rain which denied them success in the second Test at Lord’s and the calf injury which mastered him out for the rest of the series and struck James Anderson on the very first morning of the first Test.
But, in a contest of two units that are delicate batting, the Smith has been the huge gap and Australia’s bowling has become a continuous danger.
