Their unbeaten streak improved in Sky Bet League Two to three matches with a victory over 10-man Northampton.
With all three of the goals coming in the opening 31 minutes, the Iron did the harm in the first half.
Lee Novak fired them ahead in the 12th minute, beating the offside trap to bring down a smart move and flick it.
After a Kevin Van Veen header had been kept outside by Cornell two minutes after, the striker netted his second, now pouncing from close range.
Sam Hoskins shot extensive during an unusual sight at goal for the visitors, until van Veen – against his former club – curly a terrific strike to wrap up victory for the hosts.
Northampton enhanced after the break, but any hopes they had back into the game vanished after striker Vadaine Oliver was shipped off in the 54th minute for catching Scunthorpe goalkeeper Rory Watson in the face with his boot when challenging for the ball.
A bloodied Watson was forced off, although the Iron continued to control – with a combination of Cornell and the crossbar denying Novak a hat-trick overdue on.
