Legend, motivational – only some of the words used to explain Sir Ian Botham by those all-rounders who tried to follow in his footsteps.
Botham scored 5,200 runs in 102 Tests and bagged 383 wickets but his personality and swagger were uplifting, epitomised at the 1981 Ashes at Headingley.
That show spawned a generation of cricketers who wanted to be like’Beefy’, including Dominic Cork, so we sent him to monitor senior cricketers who asked them to the memories of Sir Ian and attempted to step into Botham’s shoes.
Click on the video over to see donations from Derek Pringle, Chris Lewis, Phillip DeFreitas, Craig White and England Ben Stokes, who produced a Headingley wonder of his own!
Topics discussed at the video include….
– The way players handled the transition from watching Botham as their hero to becoming his team-mate – as well as his room-mate!
– The problems of coping with being in comparison with Beefy on the pitch and being judged by his criteria
– we are unlikely to see a different all-rounder in Botham’s mould, and also the way that Stokes contrasts with bat and ball
