Legend, motivational – just some of the words used to characterize Sir Ian Botham.
Botham believed 5,200 runs in 102 Tests and bagged 383 wickets but swagger and his personality were uplifting, epitomised in Headingley.
That series spawned a generation of cricketers who desired to be like’Beefy’, including Dominic Cork, so we sent him to track down more senior cricketers who asked them to their memories of Sir Ian and attempted to measure into Botham’s shoes.
Click the video over to see donations from Chris Lewis, Derek Pringle, Phillip DeFreitas, Craig White and also the man-of-the-summer Ben Stokes of England, that produced a Headingley wonder of his own!
Topics discussed within the video include….
– How players handled the transition from seeing Botham as their hero to getting his team-mate – and even his room-mate!
– The difficulties of coping with being judged by his own standards and being compared on the pitch to Beefy
– we are unlikely to see another all-rounder in the mould of Botham, and the way that Stokes compares with ball and bat
