Muhammad Ali.
Jack Dempsey. Floyd Mayweather. Rocky Balboa. One of those fighters is literary but they are all fierce competitors that boxing players look for when wagering with this particular sport. Pun alert! Or more accurately, since this is pun and boxing (ches) need to property, bad pun alert!
Fundamental Odds and Betting Options
There are many betting options for boxing and each requires a different approach. Here we will clarify the moneyline, method of success bets and complete rounds wagers.
Moneyline
This is a frequent wager for boxing fans and only requires you to decide on a winner. Everything you win will be contingent on the betting lines. Wouldn’t that be an wonderful band name? The gambling line — the real line not the imitation ring — is a method for those sportsbooks to determine who should win a struggle and how convincingly.
Boxing moneyline odds would look something like this:
Rocky +130
Apollo Creed -160
In this case Apollo Creed is the favorite and you would have to wager $160 to win $100. Rocky is the underdog so you’d only have to bet $100 to win $130.
The above example between Philadelphia’s favorite son as well as The Dancing Destroyer is considered a competitive matchup. But, there are occasions where you’ll see boxers listed as huge favorites with lines like -10000. You’d need to wager $10,000 to win $100. A good illustration of a matchup with a massive favorite could be a fight between Anthony Joshua and Alexander Povetkin. When they fought September of 2018, the chances were Joshua -1100 and Povetkin +650.
FYI – Favorites are constantly represented with minus signs (-). Underdogs are always represented with plus signs (+). This is consistent across every sport. If you find a favorite or underdog with another emblem like a smiley face or poop emoji, eliminate this sportsbook. Just like a puppy in a kayak, they haven’t any idea what they are doing.
Method of Victory
Another frequent bet you can create on boxing is the method of victory. Rather than predicting who’ll win the struggle, you’d predict the way the struggle will end.
Let’s use the exact same Rocky vs Creed example. Rather than gambling on Creed to acquire (-160), you can bet on Creed to win by knockout (+160). If Creed does win via knockout, you’d win your moneyline bet and you would win your way of victory bet also.
Total Rounds
If you’re looking for another take on boxing betting, attempt total rounds. This involves gambling on the number of rounds that a fight will proceed. You’ll see a line that looks something like this:
O/U 11.5 rounds (-120/+105)
If you think the battle will complete within 11.5 rounds, you’d wager the UNDER (that is what the U stands for). If you think the fight goes beyond 11.5 rounds, then you’d be the OVER (that is what the O stands for). The numbers in the brackets work the same as the lines in our other illustrations. The preferred is -120 along with the underdog is +105.
