Three decades ago, a 16-year-old Bianca Andreescu wrote herself a fake cheque.
This tact has been a mock-up of this one given to the US Open champion.
But after beating the great Serena Williams 6-3 7-5 at Saturday’s compelling closing, the composed Canadian is ready to money a real one value roughly #3.1m.
“I’ve been dreaming about this moment for the longest time,” that the 19-year-old stated of winning her first Grand Slam title, wiping tears away as the magnitude of what she had just achieved finally hit.
“For this to become a reality is mad.”
Crazy is a phrase that Andreescu, like most teens uses to describe scenarios that are unexpected and one that has consumed in her chats with the media over the last few days.
Perhaps not without good reason.
Struggling with trauma and twelve months ago, she lost in the first round of qualifying at Flushing Meadows and was ranked in the entire world beyond the top 200.
But she’s grown into one of the most players on the planet following a rise this year.
The Spartan parents Nicu and Maria of andreescu, whose , had played matches .
Since then she has won prestigious WTA Premier names in Indian Wells and Toronto, climbing to 15th in the world as a result and raking in 1.79m of her 1.97m career prize money.
Now the gains are even higher after becoming a Grand Slam champion: she will climb to fifth in the world, take home a winning trophy of #3.13m and, surely, become a confront recognized by many outside of those parameters of Canada and tennis.
“I never really thought of becoming famous. I’m not complaining though,” she smiled.
“My goals are to just win as many Grand Slams as possible, become number one on the planet. However, the notion of fame not crossed my mind.
“It’s been a crazy journey this past season. I can definitely get used to this atmosphere .”
And the prize money? “Don’t ask me that because I don’t have any clue. I’ve never held that much money in my entire life!”
Succumbing to the trappings of wealth and fame at a young age looks unlikely for the hot teenager, who has been nurtured mum, an engineer, and by dad Nicu a compliance officer to get a fund firm, Maria.
Maria herself has become a favorite figure, especially among networking consumers, thanks to her striking appearance and since she brings Coco to sit on her lap through games.
Andreescu, an only child, describes her as”the coolest person I know and also my character model”.
She has her mother to thank for helping create the mental resilience which as Williams threatened to derail her hopes, she needed to block a passionate home crowd at Flushing Meadows.
“I started meditating and visualising ever since I was 12 or 13 when my mom introduced it to me, and that I understand it wasn’t such a big thing back then, but now it’s getting more popular because I think if you’re able to control your mind, then it’s possible to control a great deal of stuff,” she explained.
“I feel that is what’s been working very well for me personally. I just kept doing that.
“When I am on the court facing these huge stages, I’m excellent at simply blocking everything and remaining in the zone.”
Belief is not something Andreescu gets in short supply, exemplified by the way she struts on the court – about the Arthur Ashe Stadium, in her first Grand Slam final – along together with her head constantly up.
And that assurance dissipates at as with a killer forehand currently rated as one of the finest in the sport, as well a marvellous game which has the variety to pull against enemies apart.
Williams, the 23-time Grand Slam winner rated as the greatest player in history, could not cope with the consistent thickness of the teenager as she had been hustled out of a leading.
“I feel as though Bianca plays well under pressure. She goes out and she plays hard,” the 37-year-old said.
“She does what she does , and that’s move until the ball, that is hit winners, that is play a whole lot of intensity”
Andreescu had already earned six wins over top-10 players this year – Caroline Wozniacki, Elina Svitolina, Angelique Kerber (twice), Kiki Bertens and Karolina Pliskova – going into Saturday’s final.
And Williams, who she led from their Rogers Cup final in Toronto prior to the retired with a back injury, became the latest victim.
This run into the US Open title implies this season is matched by also an outstanding 45 of her 49 and Andreescu has won 14 straight games.
She is the first teenager to raise Grand Slam singles title since Maria Sharapova won the 2006 US Open aged 19 and paired Monica Seles’ list of winning a big in the Open age on her fourth appearance.
A dream-like year has not been without its challenges, while the rise of Andreescu was rapid.
She missed a huge chunk of this season after suffering a shoulder injury at the Miami Open in March which, after an ill-judged attempt to play the French Open, forced her to miss the entire grass-court swing, which makes her speedy ascent and formidable winning album even more remarkable.
“It is undoubtedly a process of life. You are never going to have ups all of the time,” she explained.
“So I think in these moments, you simply have to deal with it the best that you possibly can, and that’s to keep fighting to your fantasies and just stay as continuous and persevere as much as possible.
“I know in those minutes you really feel as though you can not.
“However, if you think that there are great times ahead, then those difficult moments are definitely well worth it. I think you are built by that it .
“I think everybody should go through it as it only makes you stronger”
