Team USA captain Juli Inkster confessed the rate of play was a problem on the launching day of the Solheim Cup.
Inkster’s side path Europe 4.5-3.5 after a long day at Gleneagles, together using three of their day fourballs taking good over five hours to be finished.
“Yes [it was an issue], it is painfully slow on the market,” said Inkster. “I understand we’d maybe a couple on our side which are a bit slower, but they also have a few on their side, also, that are a little slow. So I don’t know, I don’t understand exactly what to do.
“You have a look at this golf course, it’s tough. The wind is blowing off. The greens are firm. The ball is not going anywhere. It’s chilly. I mean, it’s not like it is a pitch and putt. It is out here every shot counts and a tough golf course. Every putt counts.
“So it is likely to take more. That is just the way it’s. I thought the way today, the golf was played was phenomenal to the ailments. It’s hard. It is challenging golf.”
American Lizette Salas put on the clock at the opening fourball of this day and has been given a warning, but Inkster defended her participant, who dropped 2 alongside Danielle Kang & 4 to Anne van Dam and Suzann Pettersen.
“I believe Lizette had a terrible time,” she said. “But this was the only participant that had a bad time out there. She understands she has to speed this up a little bit. But I am not going to mention anything”
The USA stared at a huge overnight deficit at one point but Nelly Korda and Lexi Thompson and Jessica Korda along with Brittany Altomare snatched pliers with critical birdies at the 18th.
“No one really ever talks about the half stage. And I have to say those two half things in the conclusion were enormous,” she said.
“So we start off hot and we all have a tiny lukewarm in the middle, but we finished hot. So I’m very happy with the way because everyone played , the day went. And then we had some great matches.
“We simply gotta keep the Euros within our rear-view mirrorour front mirror, thus we can see them. You do not wish to get too far down. It was looking as though we can be two-and-a-half points down.
“It’s not insurmountable, however, you retain gnawing a half a point here and point there plus it adds up. To be a point down. You look at the golf and we are just a stage down. So I am very happy with where we are at today.”
Team Europe captain Catriona Matthew will abandon it to the officials to find out and was not too concerned about the pace of play.
“Clearly that nine this day did get fairly slow,” she said. “I don’t really know what triggered it. When you’re leaping around not after just 1 game it’s tough to tell.
“However, some of the players on both sides do require quite some time to reach a shot. Nonetheless, it’s the officers actually. They’re the ones who police play’s speed, so it’s really up to them, I presume.
“The players have been conscious of the speed of play coverages. I mean, nobody would like to see play that is slow. Obviously with all the larger crowds it’s more difficult at times, but it would be wonderful to be quicker tomorrow.”
Matthew was somewhat frustrated, however, her side’s guide was not larger after Azahara Munoz and Bronte Law and Charley Hull and Carlota Ciganda either had to pay for pliers as it ended.
“Our purpose is to attempt to win every session,” she explained. “But I think you have to take the positives and we’re leading. We’re a stage up. That will be amazing if we are leading at the conclusion of every day.
“Therefore I think clearly everyone’s a little disappointed by that, but Charley had a fantastic putt at the past, just a little firm.
“Brittany holed up and left a fantastic birdie. It is not as if they dropped it with drama that is awful; the others birdied it. We’re pleased with going in using a one-point lead.”
