Ole Gunnar Solskjaer remains convinced Manchester United can persuade a contract to be signed by David de Gea, despite no breakthrough and still protracted discussions.
Widespread reports at the end of last season maintained the Spain goalkeeper was close to signing up a brand new bailout deal but Solskjaer has admitted he is in the dark about discussions have developed since then.
De Gea’s current deal expires at the end of the year and Solskjaer believes the 28-year-old, whom he considers”the best’keeper in the world”, wants to stay at Old Trafford – but within only four months’ period , he can begin to discuss contracts with overseas clubs.
“I am very – well – I’m pretty confident it’ll get sorted. He is said anything to me other than he adores this club and wants to remain here, and he has had a wonderful time,” Solskjaer said ahead of the Premier League visit of Leicester on Saturday.
“You need to ask David and the team [how conversations are going]. I have not been included in the talks. So let’s just hope we put it done over the line.
“He could see what we’re doing . We would like the very best players here and the ones we want – all this time – remain. There aren’t many that we would like to keep that we do not manage to.
“I am confident we’ll manage to convince David that here is the potential for him and a prosperous future.”
Solskjaer triumphed United are currently scouting goalkeepers given the uncertainty over the near of Dea Gea – however the Norwegian, whose side would be eighth after a win and 2 draws from four games, insists he is pleased with his goalkeeping department.
“We’re always mindful of happening across the world [along with different goalkeepers] – but my focus and also the club’s focus would be always to convince him (De Gea) to remain,” he said.
“I’ve got two very good backup keepers here in Lee (Grant) and Sergio (Romero), and Dean (Henderson) is out on loan [at Sheffield United]. The goalkeeper department is in great health.
“Whenever David concedes a goal, it is headlines, that he should have stored it. Whenever a game is lost by us – and we have lost just one because July 1 – it sounds like we’re really struggling. That’s just the way it’s here and you have to manage it. Possess confidence that is strong and you have to be resilient.
“David’s fine. I really don’t fret about him whatsoever.”
