A row has been ignited by michael Owen’s new book on networking between the former England striker along with Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer.
One of the cutting outlines from the book includes Owen’s claim that his move from Real Madrid to the Magpies at 2005 was a”downward step” and the one movement he”really regrets”.
The pair traded tweets as the story broke on Tuesday – but what’s the background of their feud?
In Reboot – My LifeMy Time, which has been serialised in the Daily Mirror, Owen also goes into detail regarding his relationship with Newcastle’s fans through an injury-hit spell with the team, which finished with him linking Manchester United after the Magpies’ relegation to the Championship in 2009.
“I should have followed my gut instincts, so I did not want to go there – my heart had been set to a return to Liverpool,” said Owen – who had left Anfield for Real in 2004 – of his move to St James’ Park.
The 39-year-old former England captain claimed Newcastle were”just a major club in the sense that it has lots of fans and a big arena”. Ouch.
Match of the Day pundit Shearer, the Magpies’ album goalscorer, reacted on media.
Tweeting a chunk of Owen telling BT Sport in 2018 he”couldn’t wait to retire for the final six or seven decades” of his career, Shearer posted:”Yes, Michael, we believed that also, whilst on #120K per week”
Input Owen again, questioning Shearer’s devotion to Newcastle…
That retort definitely got people talking, but did this blood begin?
Newcastle’s relegation at 2009 seems to function as the catalyst for the pair relationship, based on Owen’s book.
Shearer was interim supervisor in the time and, heading into this season’s last day, the Magpies needed at least a draw at Aston Villa or his 16-season spell in the Premier League would return to an end.
Owen claims he was not fully fit however, with Villa 1-0 up during Damien Duff’s own goal, the striker came on as a replacement at the 66th minute.
Newcastle could not find a reply and were condemned into the Championship, also Owen alleges Shearer was”seething” together with him and insinuated the player”had a eye on my contract”, with his existing deal going to execute.
“I believed I was being made a scapegoat,” said Owen.
“If you analyse it, it makes sense. Shearer’s listing as manager in the last eight games of that 2008-09 season was dire: lost five, drew two, won you.”
Of his 49-year-old former England team-mate, Owen added:”Alan Shearer and that I haven’t talked out this face to face and that is a shame since, as I’ve said many, many times, we had been quite great friends.”
He then proceeds to explain he had been part of an extensive interview with BT Sport in 2018 where he had touched upon his adventures with injury in his profession and was taken aback by the way Shearer had”began ranting about it on Twitter”.
Owen asserts he had a text dialog with Shearer after this tweet in which he provided an explanation after Shearer had stated Newcastle fans will be”unimpressed to listen he did not enjoy playing there”.
“It wentas I suspected, just nowhere,” he added.
Since the spat continuing gary Lineker, who hosts Match of the Day alongside Shearer as well as working on BT Sport, afterwards acted as peacemaker.
“There appears to be a bit of history ? I like you both so do not wish to choose sides,” that he also tweeted.
