Japanese GP: Mercedes upgrades impress as Ferrari left with concerns

Mercedes canpush the vehicle farther than before, according to Valtteri Bottas, after a remarkable start using an updated W10 in the Japanese GP – leaving Ferrari stressing their rivals are back ahead .
Fridays practice sessions in Suzuka took on additional importance due to the effect the incoming Typhoon Hagibis is already having on the F1 schedule. Using qualifying transferred to Sunday morning, the trail will be closed on Saturday and Exercise Three cancelled entirely.
Mercedes have dominated the Japanese GP at the and they picked up where they left here, with Bottas pipping Hamilton in both periods and their closest rivals three tenths of another adrift.
Ferrari have secured the last four pole positions however asked by Sky Sports F1 if he thought that they have sufficient speed to fit Mercedes on Sunday afternoon, Charles Leclerc maintained:I dont think so. I believe Mercedes is quite, very fast this weekend.
Really, FP2 I believe everybody approached it as a qualifying because we arent sure to do qualy about Sunday morning [in case the weather remains bad]. I believe that is more or less the true picture for your weekend and they seem to be quite quick.
Sebastian Vettel, fifth-fastest in P2, added:We found now that Mercedes was very fast and feeling quite comfortable straight away. Perhaps they did a step forward, possibly the track suits them recently, a great deal of things that might be the situation.
So are Mercedes?
As they concentrate on 2020 growth, having released fewer updates on the W10 in recent weeks, Mercedes tested what they predicted alittle upgrade on Friday with modifications based around the cars sidepods.
We attempted the new bits in the auto and it felt good since the start, explained Bottas, who had been faster than Hamilton by a tenth in P2 despite a young spin.
Happy with the auto in general, only minor things using the balance to tweak. Both long and short runs now felt great.
The Finn included:We need to remember it is only practice. I do feel that the benefits we have made with the automobile so thats always a wonderful feeling. We could push the car. I think we must focus on ourselves, knowing that its likely to be close on Sunday with qualifying and the race
Although there was little to pick between the leading Mercedes drivers on Friday, Hamilton nevertheless saidValtteri showed great pace and that there was still areas he can improve for Sunday.
it is a work in progress. If you are going on trail youre pushing the limits, but theres always time to find at this monitor and there are always places that youre weak at, said the world champion.
This is not what Id say is one of my most powerful circuits and theres always areas you can change. Valtteri obtained a large tow on his fastest lap and gained like half a second on the back right, therefore…
Mercedes closing P2 advantage – 0.281 seconds – was Max Verstappen in the lead Red Bull, rather than the Ferraris, who finished fourth and fifth in both sessions.
The first practice was not so good but the second clinic we enhanced already a good deal and that seemed a little more promising. But Mercedes is very quick and weve got a little more work to perform. But at least it turned out to be a decent recovery
