Jamie Carragher marvelled at hiscomposure and caliber on the chunk. The famously hard-to-please Roy Keane talked up hislovely performance. Even Cesc Fabregas lent his approval. Saka is a player, he composed Twitter. Eighteen years old and showing great maturity
Arsenal and Manchester Uniteds 1-1 draw at Old Trafford last month was another reminder of how far the 2 clubs have dropped since the times of the epic rivalry, a gruesome affair. For Bukayo Saka, however, it also provided a platform to enhance a fast growing reputation.
At 18 decades and 25 days , and making his seventh mature appearance for Arsenal, Saka became the youngest player to start a Premier League game between the 2 sides. And at a floor there was slight evidence of their inexperience.
In fact, Saka spot appears more secure than that of the #72m Nicolas Pepe. Unai Emery described Saka as ansignificant player following the Manchester United game and began him in the 1-0 win over Bournemouth. The academy graduate will likely be assured of keeping his position against Sheffield United on Monday Night Football.
And why shouldnt he be?
Saka provided the first glimpses of his raw skills last season – most notably with his man-of-the-match revealing against Qarabag in the Europa League – however, similar to one of his driving runs down Arsenals left flankhis progress has gained momentum from the new effort.
The winger scored his first senior goal in the 3-0 win over Eintracht Frankfurt a month, finding the bottom corner with a curling finish from 25 yards out, and that there also have been three aids, including the intelligent through-ball for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyangs equaliser at Old Trafford.
It is that ability that has propelled Saka moving him graduates Reiss Nelson and Joe Willock at the pecking order of Emery, but what is just as encouraging for Arsenal supporters is that hes demonstrating the character too. Saka humble it off and is confident and mature.
Respectful, very hard-working and always ready to learn, is how team captain Granit Xhaka explained him lately. Theyre traits not just to those operating in Arsenals academy, which he joined at age eight, but in addition the staff at Greenford High School in Ealing, west London, where he was a pupil from the age of 11 to 16.
He had been a role model of a pupil, assistant head teacher Mark Harvey, who taught Saka PE, informs Sky Sports. A beautiful and respectful lad having a really great attitude. He carried himself in a way that was great.
Occasionally you are able to instruct pupils that are extremely good in football, but if you get them on a pitchthey just hog the ball or they want to flaunt with it. Bukayo was not that type of guy in any respect. If anything, he also played down how great he was, that was really nice to watch.
Saka was training regularly with Arsenal by the time he started at Greenford, making the long journey from his family home in Ealing into the club north-east London academy several times each week, however it is a nod to his mindset – and ability – which he never permitted his research to suffer – even if his soccer commitments demanded time out of school.
He did his GCSEs together before he left and that he did very, very well, says Harvey. All of his grades had been large, particularly in English and Maths. In addition, he did business studies, hed RE, hed sciences that are combined. He did really well through the board, which is amazing considering the quantity of time.
We attempted to work with Arsenal as much as possible. We knew the ranges he was becoming along with he was, so that we had been flexible about allocating him out time. His family were really supportive and always ensured he would do his homework, which was the essential thing.
Saka threw himself with the dedication, rising through the youth positions of Arsenal and breaking into Freddie Ljungbergs U23s after his 17th birthday. At precisely the exact same time, he was faring similarly nicely in Englands junior sides, impressing coaching staff with the way he embraced an unfamiliar position.
He also caught the attention in the exact identical way he does today, Neil Dewsnip, Englands former U18s trainer, informs Sky Sports. He was very quick, powerful and may hurt defences, whether that was as an out-and-out left winger or really as a left-back, which is where he played for us at the beginning of this past year.
He handled that positional change very well. Hes very competent at one-v-one defending, so he did get found out, and he was very good at learning. He had been amenable to what else along with my assistant told him. He was not in any manner obstructive to whatever any member of staff said.
Saka has shown the willingness to take on Emerys instructions this year, his adaptation aided about the training team, and there has been signs of his defensive sense. Saka is currently averaging tackles per 90 minutes compared to any Arsenal player in the Premier League.
It seems he has even made a comment on Gareth Southgate, that name-dropped Saka when talking Englands attacking options . A to the side would come as little surprise to Dewsnip.
He understands what he is about and he is really inspired, he says. I discovered him to be silent, but perhaps not in a poor manner. He had remarks and I discovered he spoke really intelligently from a football perspective, if he had the floor at the area. He was more than capable of making observations about the oppositions strengths and weaknesses.
Saka succeeded in running in Ashley Young at every opportunity exploiting the weaknesses of Manchester United at Old Trafford and pouncing from Axel Tuanzebe to get the equaliser of Arsenal. The challenge is to establish himself for the long-term.
At first, young players get that luxury of opponents not really understanding much about them, states Dewsnip. Bukayo is fast, hes powerful, he could make , he can score, he can cross. But everybody knows that. He will need to find other methods of changing the game as well.
It is fortunate, then, that Saka has an established appetite for self-improvement – and that there appears little possibility of his profile moving to his mind. In Greenford High Schoolwhere the team refer to him asour boy and where his signed England U19s shirt hangs framed on the wall at a reception area, he remains a regular guest.
Our old head teacher was a big Chelsea fan, but he had a really great connection with Bukayo and Bukayo actually came right back to his leaving do a year along with his dad, says Harvey. He had a few pictures taken and talked to some of our students. He still has friends in sixth-form here and that he frequently comes into school and says hello to people
The simple fact that Saka has buddies is a reminder that this is just the start for him. He doesnt even turn 19 . But the ingredients are there for a brilliant future. Saka is making a major impression from Ealing to Old Trafford.
