I hoped for a last lap but in the long run it was enough for pole.”
The almost laughable scenes at the end were precipitated by the simple fact that a slipstream at Monza could be worth roughly 0.3secs a lap, valuable when the instances are so close to a circuit with only six powerful corners.
Hamilton said because they waited for Ferrari to run Mercedes had been caught out.
“I must be thankful I’m on the front row,” the world champion said. “We expect to get a fight with the Ferraris tomorrow. We divide it and them is a nice position to maintain. We can give a fantastic fight to them.
“It was a little anti-climax at the conclusion but it is crazy with this system we’ve got and they basically timed us out.
“On the outside lap it’s dangerous. You don’t know who’s alongside you and who’s slowing down. It is risky business but it’s enjoyable at precisely exactly the exact same moment.”
Teams had been warned that motorists may face penalties for driving gradually on their out laps and the end to qualifying has been researched by governing body the FIA.
Leclerc, Hamilton and Bottas agreed the situation was far from perfect, but said that they did not find a way out of it while the tow was really significant to some lap time.
“It’ll be until somebody crashes that they will alter it,” Hamilton stated.
The controversial conclusion to the session was fitting in some ways for a day filled with controversy and episode.
Vettel narrowly avoided using his sole real lap time in closing qualifying for abusing track limits in the Parabolica corner that was last deleted.
Red Bull’s Alexander Albon didn’t record some time on his very first run since he ran contrary to Alfa Romeo’s Kimi Raikkonen, who cried at Parabolica.
Hamilton, who had to lift in the previous corner, later saying he felt that had cost him pole and was right was delayed by the crash of raikkonen.
Along with Bottas, running Hamilton at the moment, originally had his first lap time deleted on the basis that he hadn’t made it across the line before the crimson flag for Raikkonen’s crash, only for officials to reinstate it said he had.
And Bottas escaped with his time deleted despite passing yellow flags for the crash of Raikkonen, on the grounds that he’d slow down – which he said he felt had cost him pole.
The track limits needed to be policed at Parabolica because a kerb the was inserted from moving off track, to deter the motorists needed to be removed after it established a Formula 3 car in a hurry in the afternoon right into a accident.
Australian Alex Peroni suffered a set of somersaults and spins before crashing down upside down on the obstacles.
He walked away from the wreck but was afterwards taken to hospital for further medical tests.
Vettel has now been out-qualified by Leclerc for seven races in a row and the session didn’t go his way.
After the Ferraris followed the Mercedes outside just to see the silver cars pull over at the close of the pit lane, his lap was set by him with no tow. Vettel hesitated, thought about quitting behind them, but then accelerated away.
In the circumstances, he failed to lap within 0.15secs of Leclerc.
The Monegasque explained the first plan was for Vettel to parade him on then Leclerc and the very initial runs to return the favour.
But in the turmoil of the dying moments, Vettel overtook as the cars jockeyed for position Leclerc lap.
Leclerc and Vettel passed earlier Parabolica on schooling but Vettel did not cross the line in time to do a job.
Ricciardo works nicely on this type of track and has been from the Renault, which lacks downforce but includes a solid engine in great shape.
The Australian has been 0.21secs quicker than team-mate Nico Hulkenberg, using McLaren’s Carlos Sainz eighth.
McLaren’s Carlos Sainz and red Bull’s Max Verstappen, the Daniil Kvyat of Toro Rosso will start the race from the back Because of penalties to using engines.
And Raikkonen, though he had been classified 10th, is likely to combine them.
Ali Plumb gives his thoughts about the films of the year so far
Analysis and opinion in the chief Formula 1 author of the BBC.
Get headlines and the latest results sent straight to your phone, find most of our Formula 1 policy details together with our Live Guide, subscribe to our newsletter and also learn where to find us on online.

Read more:

Our partners use technology, such as cookies, and gather information to give you the ideal internet experience and to personalise the content and advertisements.
